Alastair has been a professional archaeologist since 2004 and a full-time forensic archaeologist since 2014. As the Science Lead for Forensic Archaeology at Cellmark Forensic Services he is responsible for overseeing all matters relating to quality, training and competence, as well as research and development. Alastair undertakes a wide range of casework for the police, military, defence and cold case reviews, utilising specialisms in landscape and spatial analysis, remote sensing data analysis and 3D modelling, in addition to undertaking scene examinations and searches. He is a specialist in the reconstruction of historic environments in a forensic context and has experience as an expert witness in both criminal courts and coroner’s inquests. Alastair also advises on the wide range of forensic environmental sciences and is experienced in providing training to the police and professionals from other industries.
Alastair is a member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists as a forensic archaeologist at the highest membership level(MCIfA). He is also the co-Chair of the Forensic Archaeology Expert Register and Panel (FAERP), which is the advisory body to the Home Office, responsible for defining the standards and guidance for forensic archaeologists. Alastair has acted as the external advisor for higher education courses in forensic archaeology and is a member of the editorial board for the Forensic Soil Science book series.
