Handwriting Comparison & Questioned Documents

Handwriting examinations involve the comparison of a quantity of questioned writing with a set of specimen handwriting from a particular individual suspected of writing it.  It is also possible to compare groups of handwriting with each other to establish common authorship.

Our handwriting expert requires suitable specimen handwriting to be able to complete an effective comaprison.  Given that every individual exhibits a range of variation in their handwriting, it is important that the speciments demonstrate this range.  It is therefore beneficial to have not only specimen writing taken as a result of dictation but also 'course of normal use' samples.  Similarly, when comparing signatures, it is important to establish the range of variation present in an individual's reference signatures and, if possible, reference signatures from the same period the questioned signature was formed.

Where possible original documents should be used for examination.  Opinions can be given based on copy documents but this may influence the strength of opinion expressed.

Questioned documents examination includes printed and photocopied material and the analysis of inks.  Our expert can also examine indented writing on underlying documents using ESDA analysis.
