Computing services and digital evidence
The use of computers, storage media (such as DVDs, CD-ROMs, thumb drives, media cards, floppy disks) and digital devices (such as PDAs and digital cameras) has grown significantly in recent years. These devices can provide a wealth of information which may aid in determining whether they have been used for illegal or unauthorised activities.
Considerable expertise is required to retrieve data without corrupting or distorting the original evidence and this is done with the use of specialist software and techniques. In many cases it is possible to retrieve data that has apparently been deleted from a computer or has been stored without the user’s knowledge.
We can review reports on seized material and confirm whether the correct procedures were followed in order to ensure the continuity of evidence. We can inspect the alleged material ourselves and assist in ascertaining how the material may have originated.
The Internet
The mass take up of the Internet has made the distribution of files much easier. Downloading or distribution of illegal files can be investigated, including pornographic material or illegal copies of copyright software, music or films. We can help determine the possibility of accidental downloads or unknown receipt of material.
We are also able to advise on Internet usage cases involving instant messaging (e.g. MSN Messenger, Yahoo, AOL), email, Internet history, Internet searches, access to web sites and file sharing programs (e.g. Kazaa, Bearshare, BitTorrent).
Wiper software and Virus and Trojans
We are able to examine computers where wiper software has been used to remove information. This includes determining what evidence is recoverable and examining and reconstructing any remaining fragments. We are also able to assess if the possession of illegal materials may be due to a virus or Trojan infection.
Counterfeit Material
We have advised in cases involving counterfeit CDs and DVDs. We can test the evidence media to check for copyright material or other alleged illegality. We can also examine the equipment and software being used to produce illegal media.
Digital System Analysis
We are able to provide advice in cases regarding the use/production of software systems in businesses. This includes advising about fitness for purpose and compliance to requirements including reviewing the implementation of security policies/user guidelines.
